OAKLAND MUSEUM GIFT STORE
Varnished Oak Retail Store
The store's design takes its cues from the massive stacked concrete volumes of Roche & Dinkeloo’s architecturally significant building with an approach that is similarly over-scaled, holding its own within the cavernous space.

Shared Materiality
Fabricated entirely of varnished oak that matches the museum's existing woodwork, the "building-block" displays follow the stepping cross-section of the building while creating a variety of unique merchandise zones. A full-height storefront was avoided in order to preserve the existing open lobby. Instead, a monumental glass case forms a transparent front edge to the store. Other large glass cases within allude as much to the exhibit cases in the adjacent galleries as they do to conventional store fixtures.
