The Sculpture Garden at SFMOMA is an integral part of the sequence of galleries of the museum; a gallery without a ceiling, that can be curated.
To accomplish this, the entire back wall of the museum’s top floor is removed allowing its contents, and visitors, to flow-out into the garden. The garden is brought into the museum via this panoramic window, and as one approaches this abstracted landscape plane, the spatial character of the garden unfolds.
Cantilevered over the garden, the Overlook suspends the visitor above and inside the Sculpture Garden while remaining within the Museum. The garden is a space for sculpture, not a sculptural artifact in itself. It is the intersection of sculpture, space, and light. The city is hidden behind lichen-covered walls that frame the sky.
